In 2009, we began our journey in the coffee industry, initially managing catering at a local coffee shop. A year later, we both worked as baristas at another café, which we eventually closed and cleaned as janitors. Our daughter, who was just a toddler, often accompanied us, exploring the café and helping in her own small ways. Her early interest in coffee extended to making drinks for her preschool teachers. This family experience inspired us to start our own business, where we could balance work and spend afternoons together.
The adventure of opening our café began in August 2019, after a year of searching for the right space. We signed a lease and planned to open in six months. However, delays and the unexpected arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 disrupted our plans. Despite these challenges, including continuing rent payments with no income, we persevered with the renovations, supported by our family. I unexpectedly took on the role of project manager, coordinating everything from electricians to painters, while our budget quickly diminished.
After numerous city inspections and a year since signing the contract, we finally opened on December 18, 2020, amidst pandemic restrictions. Throughout these challenges, resilience has been our guiding force, bolstered by the unwavering support from our family. At El Tiny Cafe, our story is one of perseverance, community, and the pursuit of a dream against all odds.
